InManners edged them out, but it was pretty even. But inyou can see Manners took a pretty commanding lead. There were twice as many people using Manners stocks as any other brand.

I used one of those on my precision rifle build last year, and you can read my review for more details on that carbon fiber stock.

They are hand laid with high temperature epoxy resins, placed under a vacuum, and heat cured to get the perfect resin to fabric weight ratio.

Manners even makes a folding stock, and 3 shooters were using one of their folding models. You can read the full review for more details on this stock. McMillan stocks hung on to the 2 spot, with a very respectable representation. But there were 2 other McMillan stocks represented in the top There was also one shooter in the top who was using a McMillan A4 Stock. Here is a look at all 4 of the McMillan stocks represented in the top These other designs are also very capable, and have a lot of compelling and innovative features.

Here is a quick review of the other stocks and chassis represented among the top shooters:. Allen, including one shooter in the top 20 and 2 more in the top Their most popular model is the JAEwhich is pictured below.

The 2 in the top 10 were both using the XLR Element chassis. It is a modular, folding chassis with a ton of features and options. Many of these chassis and stocks have options for either folding or a fixed stock. So I was interested to know how many guys opted to use a folding design. I suspected most were running fixed stocks, but the results were interesting. But outside of the top 20, folding chassis and stocks were far more popular with 1 in 3 shooters using them.

Folding stocks also cost more than fixed stocks. All of these factors likely play into why fixed, non-folding stocks and chassis are more popular among these top PRS shooters. I installed the barreled action in a wood 40X stock to work up load data and work out any magazine feeding issues. While I was working on that, I looked for a McMillan Baker Special stock and finally found one to finish this project. I bedded the action and stock, then took the rifle to the range to check zeros on the sights and scope. I thought changing the stock would cause sight changes. The Berger 95gr VLD is in the middle.

I took the new rifle to the first match of the year, a National Match Course match, and my off-hand score was 83, rapid sitting 95, rapid prone 95, and slow fire prone — for total aggregate This was a reduced course of fire — we shot at and yards on reduced targets. When I worked up loads for this rifle, N gave the best accuracy with the best extreme spread — 2, fps with an extreme spread of 20 fps on a shot string.

The load for yards was with a 95gr Berger VLD bullet, with This load is 2, fps, with an extreme spread of 4 fps over a shot string. Best yard score so far with iron sights was X. Manners Composite Stocks was the top brand for the first time in Even more impressive, 7 of the shooters who finished in the top 10 were running Manners stocks!

Guida parco nazionale del gran paradiso

Here are the Manners stocks that were most popular among this group of shooters. Manners offers a ton of options that allow you to customize each of these models, including an adjustable cheek and folding stock. Earlier this year I was talking to Wade Stuteville, winner of the Precision Rifle Series, about a precision rifle build and he recommended a tapered forend to help when shooting off barricades or other improvised rests.

Wade said if the forend is tapered, you can use that to your advantage, because you can slide the rifle forward or backwards on the rest to make minor vertical adjustments. However, if the forend is parallel to the bore, you have no such adjustment. It also has a butt hook that can be used to ride bags or control your rifle with your non-trigger hand. The strength to weight ratio of carbon fiber is off the charts compared to traditional stock materials.

That stock still owns most of the yard 50bmg records. Only 2 of the 14 shooters using Manners Stocks chose to go with the folding model. The hinge adds a few ounces of weight, which can become a handicap in this style of competition … although having a folding rifle can be convenient.

AI released a whole new lineup inbut none of the shooters were sporting the new models yet. All 7 of these shooters were running a folding AI chassis. KMW starts with a McMillan fiberglass stock designed to their specs, then proceeds to customize it with several cool pieces of hardware and peripherals. It is a very meticulously thought-out product. They have inlets for most rifle actions, but will also cut a custom inlet for no extra charge.

They feature a T6 aluminum billet action block. The chassis includes an integrated detachable magazine system that supports AICS style mags. This chassis was designed to be the shortest purpose-built sniper rifle in the world.

The bullpup configuration and telescoping bolt make it almost a foot shorter than conventional bolt rifles. The compact design shifts weight and center-of-gravity rearward.I like the look of it but I am interested in functionality most of all.

All rights reserved. Terms of Use. Privacy Policy.Very interesting stuff! I recently surveyed the top shooters in the Precision Rifle Series PRSand this year I included a question to capture what trigger these elite shooters were using in The PRS tracks how top competitors place in major rifle matches across the country. These are the major leagues of sniper-style competitions, with targets typically from to yards.

These world-class shooters represent the best of the best in terms of long-range shooting in field conditions. The results were very interesting! But there were several other triggers represented, and a few of those seem to have new innovative designs. For those unfamiliar, many view the Jewell trigger as the gold standard for bolt action precision rifles. The Jewell HVR trigger is a single-stage trigger, and like most bolt-action trigger upgrades it is in a completely self-contained module.

The safety is similar to a factory Remington safety and the trigger also features a factory-style bolt release. The pull weight is adjustable from 3. The Jewell design spares no expense, with complete high grade stainless steel construction. All internal components are CNC machined from stainless steel, then heat-treated to Rockwell 58 for extended service life.

The side plates are stainless steel. One attractive feature of the Jewell trigger for many shooters is the ability to easily adjust the trigger externally, without the need to remove the barreled action from the stock or chassis.

Adjustment screws are fitted with a nylon insert to maintain your trigger settings without using thread locking compounds. Timney Triggers were the 2 nd most popular brand, with 19 shooters choosing one to run one of their triggers.

They have several models to choose from.

I thought there may be shooters using different models, so if they were running a Timney I had a follow-up question to see which specific model they were running. Here is the breakdown:. Most of the guys running Timney Triggers were using the Timney Calvin Elite Triggerwhich is a newer design with a lot of modern features. The Timney Calvin Elite is adjustable from 2. The internals of the Calvin Elite Trigger are made from A2 tool steel, heat-treated to Rockwell 58, and features Teflon-nickel coatings.

The lightweight T6 aluminum housings are CNC machined and anodized. Pull weight can be adjusted from 4 lbs. Some shooters prefer to run triggers lighter than 1.

mcmillan baker special stock

The Timney trigger is identical to thewith the exception of a straight shoe. That may seem a little strange, but it is one of those things that some guys love and some guys hate.

Some benchrest shooters prefer this type of trigger, and claim that it gives more precise finger contact. The 3 rd most popular brand of triggers was Accuracy International, with 10 shooters out of the top using it. The Accuracy International trigger is a 2 stage trigger that comes standard on AI-built rifles. At almost twice the price of a Jewell … it must be a pretty amazing trigger! Huber Concepts makes both single stage and two stage triggers.
